When Bigger Isn’t Actually Better

by Mckenna Clarke, blog writer at TOP CFOS
What can a small service provider give you that a big one can’t?

Companies with less than 20 workers make up 89.6 percent of American business. Many people automatically choose big, corporate service providers over small, local providers. And from all appearances, that seems to be a good idea. Corporate providers have experience, many resources, and hundreds of employees. It may seem like all of these factors add up to mean great services, but what can small business offer that large ones can’t?

Like David and Goliath, sometimes smaller is actually better. Here are a few examples:
  • Personability. A small service provider is far less likely to put you on hold. When you walk into the office or storefront, they may know you by name. Small businesses are the places where you can just say, “the usual” and get exactly what you want. Many times the people know you, your needs, and what you want personally.
  • Quality service. Because small businesses are, well, small, they can provide a level of service and quality that large businesses may not. Large businesses have many employees and clients, but that may not always be a good thing. They have so much going on that the details of your company may fall by the wayside.  In with small service provider, you will find that they monitor quality and provide the best service in small batches.
  • Location. Local service providers are in tune with what’s going on in your area. The internet is a beautiful thing, but can it know the culture, opportunities, and events of your area? Probably not. A small local provider can point out good space for a local billboard or hook you up with connections in your area. They can tell you about local opportunities and help you grow locally
  • Hands-on leadership. In a large firm, you would never dream of having the owner of the company as the one in charge of your account. When you’re working with a small business, however, you can know that the leaders and owners of the company are going to be hands-on and involved in giving you the best service possible.
