Today’s post comes from the Leadership category on our website and is entitled Business Management – A Skill Set.

I truly believe that to be a great CEO or business owner you have simply got to have the skill set for it or you will experience constant frustration. A lot of people are in business simply because they want to make money, not because they have the skill set to run a successful company. If you are currently a CEO or business owner and really don’t know if you’ve got what it takes to be successful, let me suggest taking an aptitude test to find out what your skills are. If your aptitude test points you in the direction of leadership, then keep doing what you’re doing! If not, then step down or sell out and go do what you are good at! I’d like to share a story with you from personal experience that will help convey what I mean here.

Several years ago, I had a client where I provided CFO accounting services. I worked for him for several years and got to know him really well. The more I worked for him the more I could see that he was simply in the wrong job. He simply lacked the leadership skills needed to run a successful company. I had a very unique vantage point, because I ran his finances for him and could clearly see what was ahead. Although he was often given sound financial advice, he lacked the ability to make wise business decisions. And, his business would suffer as a result. He struggled to meet payroll twice per month all the time. He also lacked other leadership skills as well, which in the end adversely affected his business. On the other hand, I’d like to share part of an article written by Erika Anderson, who is a contributor to Forbes.

The title of Erika’s article is “Are Leaders Born or Made?” Quoting from her article she says, “What I’ve learned by observing thousands of people in business over the past 30 years, though, is that – like most things – leadership capability falls along a bell curve.  Some people are, indeed, born leaders.  These folks at the top of the leadership bell curve start out very good, and tend to get even better as they go along. Then there are the folks at the bottom of the curve: that bottom 10-15% of people who, no matter how hard they try, simply aren’t ever going to be very good leaders.  They just don’t have the innate wiring.” I cannot stress enough the importance of finding out if being a CEO or business owner is your skill set. When you look at all the great business success stories down through the corridors of time, such as Adobe, Microsoft, IBM, or Apple, these companies who achieved phenomenal success were run by leaders who had found their niche!
