Employees’ Hidden Value

If you take good care of your employees, they’ll take good care of you. On the other hand, if you try to short-change your employees, they’ll short-change you. Your employees are one of your greatest assets. They are your eyes and ears when interfacing with your customers.

So, if you want to build a great company, build great employees who share your passion and vision! Oprah Winfrey once said, “Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher.” As an employer, if you are willing to offer the best, you will attract the best.

Employees have some great ideas on how to run a company. If you will tap into this resource, you will go far in business. Some time ago, I read a great book called The ROI of Human Capital by Dr. Jac Fitz-enz. I came away with two ideas that really stood out to me.

First: Dr. Jac Fitz-enz discussed some research that had been done on employees and their job satisfaction. Those employees who had a close friend at work were much happier than those who didn’t. Isn’t this interesting? And, their job satisfaction was much higher. For anyone who is in management, this is a powerful insight into what makes employees tick.

Second: Dr. Jac Fitz-enz taught that every employee should be interviewed by their manager at least every six months to find out how they are doing. Companies that are well-managed keep close tabs on how their employees are doing. They care about them and want to do everything in their power to make work an enjoyable place to be. This is all part of building a great culture where employees look forward to going to work every day.

At the same time, you need to strike a balance between making work fun and getting the things done that needs to get done at your firm. You can go too far in either direction, so learning where to strike a balance is critical to the success of your firm. We strike the balance here at TOP CFOS, and the results are rewarding.
