To us, exceeding customers’ expectations means surprising customers with the very best customer service. In his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen R. Covey discusses the service he once received at a hotel where everyone went out of their way to serve him. Their motto was “Uncompromising Personalized Service.” Covey said, “For a three-day period, I watched every conceivable situation where service was called for. I always found that service was delivered in a very impressive, excellent way. But it was always also very personalized.”

Randy’s found this same kind of service at a Maceys grocery store here in Utah. Randy loves shopping at this store, simply because of the fantastic customer service he experiences every time he walks in. I mean, those guys are good! He’s shopped at this store for years, and whenever he asks a clerk where he can find an item, they drop what they’re doing and take him right there. On top of this, they do it willingly. They never seem bothered, and they consider it a privilege to serve. How often do you find customers’ expectations exceeded in today’s world? Randy will go out of his way to shop there because of this. He loves being on the receiving end of this kind of service.

Another great customer service experience Randy’s enjoyed comes from Amazon. Sometimes, Randy will find himself sitting in his office late at night with a need to call Amazon to fix a problem. All he has to do is go to their website, click on the Call Me Now link, and wait a few seconds for the phone to ring with an employee ready to serve. And this is at any time of the day or night—wow! If you want to stay in business for a long time, all you have to do is follow the examples in these great customer service stories. People love being served and will come back over and over again for more.
