Success in Business

Success in business means different things to different people. However, Merriam-Webster defines success as, “the fact of getting or achieving wealth, respect, or fame.” Since we’re talking about success in business, I would have to agree with Merriam-Webster’s definition. I firmly believe there are key steps to success in business. Although this list is not all-inclusive, I’m going to list four. These steps are simply my opinion.

Hard work – the ladder to success is usually filled with tons of hard work. No one who reaches the top just falls there. In other words, you’ve got to be willing to invest many long hours to reach the top. Take a look at the people who reach the summit of Everest. Is that a feat, or is that a feat? The same is true of great sports figures. These guys spend countless hours behind the scenes where no one is watching practicing, practicing and practicing. I remember reading an article one time about professional athletes and the author said they didn’t start becoming masters at their game until they had invested at least 10,000 hours – wow! The next step to success in business is being honest with your fellowmen.

What I mean by this is being honest with everyone you deal with. This includes vendors, customers, and the government. Usually, a person’s reputation precedes them and when someone chooses the path of honesty, everyone they deal with usually treats them better. Doors open that otherwise wouldn’t open for those who choose the path of honesty. Doesn’t it give you a good feeling to know that others trust you and depend on you? Today, our world needs leaders who can be trusted. So, honesty is the best policy after all. The next step to success in business is follow-through ability.

Follow-through ability is a rare quality nowadays. When you have a conversation with anyone and you promise to do such and such, follow-through on this verbal commitment you make. I know this seems simple, but how many people actually do this? I think it shows great integrity when someone does this. My estimation of the person who does this just soars. I love seeing this quality in people, and I love doing business with them. The last step to success in business is being highly organized.

People who are highly organized usually get twice as much done in a day than someone who isn’t organized. These people don’t have to spend half their day just figuring out what to do. By being organized, they can dive into their work and go twice as fast and twice as far. So, if you want success in business, be willing to work hard, be honest with everyone, have great follow-through ability, and be highly organized.
