Today’s post comes from the Entrepreneurship category on our website and is entitled The Birth of Amazon.

Entrepreneur.com wrote an article entitled, “Jeff Bezos, The King of E-Commerce”. In this article, speaking of how Jeff started Amazon they said, “With $1 million raised from family and friends, Bezos rented a house in Seattle and set up his business in the garage. For nearly a year, Bezos and a crew of five employees worked out of the garage, learning how to source books and setting up a computer system that would make Amazon.com easy to navigate.” Although books was Amazon.com’s first product line, they soon branched out into carrying many other products.

Speaking of Amazon.com’s now expanded product line, Wikipedia lists, “…DVDs, Blu-rays, electronics, apparel, furniture, food, toys and jewelry. The company also produces consumer electronics-notably, Amazon Kindle e-book readers, Fire tablets, Fire TV and Fire Phone-and is the world’s largest provider of cloud computing services.” Amazon has a distinct mission.

Again, from Entrepreneur.com we learn, “Our vision is to be the world’s most consumer-centric company, where customers can come to find anything they want to buy online.”-Jeff Bezos I personally have been the beneficiary of the kind of customer service the forgoing statement speaks of. One time, I felt like an order was taking longer than normal to arrive. So, I called Amazon to see when my order would be here. Instead of telling me what day it would arrive, they voluntarily offered to overnight it for me at their expense! Does it get any better?

As I have learned about the birth of Amazon, there are a couple of more insights that I want to share about Jeff Bezos. We all know that it starts at the top. Every organization on earth reflects the person who’s at the helm. Jeff happens to be a person who is very passionate about Amazon. This passion is passed down through the ranks to the lowest person within the organization. Additionally, Jeff is a person who is very detail oriented. A person who has this quality never lets anything slip through the cracks. So, this character quality filters down through the entire origination. The last observation I’d like to share about Jeff is the fact that he knows how to delegate. Knowing how to delegate is one of the great qualities of any leader. Because Jeff has this quality, Amazon has become the world’s largest online retailer.
